Workshop: An Introduction to Alternative Grading Methods In-Person / Online
The news is full of articles and op-eds lamenting the supposedly declining rigor of the college curriculum, with some commentators going so far as to claim that institutions of higher education are more interested in credentialing students than really holding them accountable for their learning. While the evidence for these attacks is typically thin, at best, many instructors—and even some institutions—are taking the opportunity to rethink how they assess student learning, and to explore so-called "alternative grading" methods (like specifications grading and contract grading) to see whether they can do a better job of motivating students and gauging their achievement than our conventional, one-size-fits-all scale of letter grading. Some of these experiments have yielded promising results!
