Can We Still Assign Short Essays in the Age of AI? In-Person

Yes, but it requires rethinking how to design and teach them!

Generative AI challenges traditional assignments like the 5-page essay, as students may turn to readily available tools like NotebookLM, Gemini, or ChatGPT to do the reading, thinking, and writing for them.

This workshop invites instructors of First-Year Seminars and writing-intensive courses to explore strategies for designing short writing assignments that emphasize process, analysis, and original thinking.
